28 Days Later, starring Cillian Murphy, premiered in 2002

Since then, there have been three sequels: 28 Weeks Later (2007), 28 Years Later (2025) and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026)

Some of the films are available to stream on Netflix, but not all of them

In the 28 Days Later franchise, time hasn't healed anything.

The next installment of the series, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026), hit theaters on Jan. 16. The franchise follows what happens when a "Rage Virus" ravages the U.K. with its rapid spread of violence, examining not just the dangers of a zombie apocalypse, but also the brutality and cruelty that humanity often inflicts on itself.

Cillian Murphy starred in the inaugural film of the series, 28 Days Later (2002), as Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find a once-bustling London deserted amidst a Rage Virus outbreak that began four weeks earlier. 28 Weeks Later (2007) followed, showing what transpired about six months after the outbreak and its apparent containment.

In 2025, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland revived the franchise with 28 Years Later (2025), which takes place 28 years after the events of the sequel. Meanwhile, 2026's 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple picks up immediately where 28 Years Later leaves off. Another film is reportedly in the works, per Variety, although neither a title nor release date have been announced.

Here's everything to know about where to watch all of the previous 28 Days Later films before seeing 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

Murphy stars in 28 Days Later (2002) as Jim, who wakes up from a coma alone in a hospital and wanders around an empty London with no knowledge of why the city has been abandoned. He soon encounters other survivors, who inform him that a "Rage Virus" transmitted from chimpanzees to humans overtook Great Britain.

Jim and his small crew (played by Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson, Megan Burns and Noah Huntley) make their way through and away from London seeking refuge, but soon find that their threats to survival aren't just limited to the infected.

Set just seven months after the initial Rage Virus outbreak, 28 Weeks Later (2007) stars Robert Carlyle as Don, who abandoned his wife Alice during an attack from the infected and fled by boat to find safety.

Rose Byrne, Harold Perrineau, Idris Elba and Jeremy Renner all costar in the thriller, which examines what happens when NATO orders the United States to take control of Great Britain once the virus appears to be contained. Don arrives at a heavily-armed safe zone on the Isle of Dogs, where he reunites with his children Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton) and Tammy (Imogen Poots), who were on a school trip when the virus first took hold. They later find Alice, who is still alive and doesn't show any symptoms of the Rage Virus.

Military guards separate Alice and the children from Don, believing they may be a key to finding a cure — but much more trouble and bloodshed still awaits.

In 28 Years Later (2025), nearly three decades have passed since the initial Rage Virus outbreak. Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), his wife Isla (Jodie Comer) and their son Spike (Alfie Williams) live in a quarantined community of survivors on Holy Island, off the coast of mainland Britain.

Jamie and Spike go to the U.K. mainland for a ceremonial hunting trip, where they encounter the infected. Spike and Isla later return to the mainland to seek out Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), believing he may be able to cure Isla's mysterious illness.

The second installment of the new trilogy, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026), hit theaters on Jan. 16. The Bone Temple brings back Murphy's Jim, who returns for the first time since 2002.

Nia DaCosta helms the film, which takes place immediately after 28 Years Later. Williams also reprises his role as Spike.

"[Spike] will run right through the films," Boyle told IGN in June 2025. "We've shot the first two back-to-back, and that was for logistical reasons, actor availability reasons and for story reasons as well. They're literally continuous."

Meanwhile, Jack O'Connell also returns as cult leader Sir Jimmy Crystal, who rescues Spike from the infected at the conclusion of 28 Years Later. An official synopsis reads in part, "In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship — with consequences that could change the world as they know it — and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape."

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is available to watch in theaters.
