Caitlin Clark has established herself as a prime MVP candidate this season. Friday night’s 34-point and 12-assist performance cemented her place amongst the frontrunners in the MVP contention.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III took to social media to praise Clark for her brilliant performance vs the Connecticut Sun tonight, along with pushing forth the ‘Clark for MVP’ agenda once more.

Fans online, while appreciative of the Fever superstar’s offensive prowess, disagreed with RG3’s take.

Clark shot 12-19 from the field tonight and blistering 50% from beyond the arc (six 3s). Griffin III took to X to celebrate.

“Caitlin Clark should win the WNBA MVP. 1st Woman EVER in WNBA history to have back-to-back 30 point and 10 assist games. 6 career games of 30+ points and 10+ assists. The rest of the WNBA has 4 in league history. Only Woman EVER to have 800 points and 300 assists in a season,” he wrote.

Despite the aforementioned records and her current season averages of 22.5 points and 8.4 assists on 45.6/37.3/83.3 shooting splits, WNBA fans weren’t having it.

“RG3 should know better than this as a former pro athlete. Career records achieved is not a part of the consideration for MVP. It’s season performance & nothing else. You could be a bum all your career, but if one season you suddenly are putting up MVP numbers then you are MVP,”one user remarked.

Another pointed out that CC ranked 11 among guards in the league during the All-Star Game voting by her fellow WNBA players.They wrote, “Not sure how the 11th-best guard wins MVP?”

“Why do you cape for white people so far, what makes her MVP over A’ja or even her own teammate?” questioned another X user.

This fan’s line of questioning is similar to that of another who posted a screenshot of the odds for CC to win MVP, which are lower than those for her Fever teammate, Kelsey Mitchell.

The user wrote, “She’s a long shot,” with A’ja Wilson, Olivia Miles, and Mitchell all having better odds than CC.

One WNBA observerkept it quite straightforward and pointed out all of Clark’s statistical deficiencies from this season.

“League leader in turnovers, top 5 in missed field goal attempts, not in the Top 20 in 3pt%, not in the top 20 in 2pt%, not in the top 20 in overall FG%, [and] ranked among the worst defenders at her position in the league. How is THAT ‘MVP worthy’?”

The Fever are currently fourth in the standings with a 26-14 record following their comfortable 111-91 win over the Sun. While they are a premier team in the W this season, squads like the Aces and Lynx are higher up in the standings.

And team record, when a race is close, does factor in to a certain extent.

There is also the Fever’s predicament of having two MVP-caliber players on the same team.

Indy guard, Ty Harris, had a nifty solution, saying CC and Mitchell should be “Co-MVPs.” She continued, “Nobody wants to be co-[MVP], but hey, I’mma throw it out there. It’s hard for them, so it would be amazing just to have them [both honored] because they definitely deserve it.”

A’ja is still very much the frontrunner for league MVP in most analysts’ and oddsmakers’ eyes, so for Clark to dethrone her with merely four games left in the season would be difficult, especially when she faces stiff competition from her own teammate.
