Morris Day said he wouldn't be performing at next month's Freedom 250 event the "Great American State Fair."
The organization had announced that Day and his band, the Time, would be headlining.
Fans cheered Day's statement on social media.
Morris Day and the Time were announced Wednesday as one of the musical acts set to perform at a Freedom 250 event in Washington, D.C., next month, but the musician said he won't be part of it.
Both Day's group and the Commodores were announced as headliners at a June 27 concert on the National Mall, part of the Great American State Fair, the 16-day event celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary.
But Day posted a graphic, dismissing the news.
"Contrary to rumor, Morris Day and the Time will not be performing at the 'Great American State Fair,'" he wrote. Day captioned the post, "It's a no for me."

On its website, the organization is described as "the national, non-partisan organization leading the celebration of our Nation's 250th birthday. Working together with the White House Task Force 250, federal agencies, and the Commission, Freedom 250 serves as the official public-private partnership that connects, aligns, and amplifies national and local efforts to deliver the defining presidential moments of this anniversary year."
Morris Day & the Time was founded by Prince in 1981, and the group was part of the Purple One's iconic 1984 film "Purple Rain." Their hit songs include "Jerk Out," "Jungle Love," and "The Bird."
Many fans cheered Day's decision.
"Thank you. I just let out the biggest exhale," one person commented.
Another wrote, "Thank God! I was about to give Morris the side eye."
"Good," a third wrote. "I had to come to the source. We all know you have better sense than that."
