Darlene Love and Bill Medley kept their love affair a secret — until now.

Decades after they were together, Love, 85, is sharing details about their romance in her new documentary *Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been, *which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.

She shared that she had a three-year relationship with Medley, one half of the Righteous Brothers. The two met while Love was doing background vocals on the musical variety series *Shindig!*, which the Righteous Brothers appeared on. They later went on tour together in the late 1960s, sparking a relationship.

“We had both divorced by then, and we really became really, really, really tight on the road,” she said in the film, per PEOPLE. “We were together for three years, and nobody really knew except for people who we were traveling with, and we did quiet things. We didn’t want to make no ruffles. We didn’t want to make nobody unsafe when we were in the South.”

In a post-Jim Crow environment, their agents and managers were still resistant to Medley and Love being in an interracial relationship and fought to keep their love under wraps.

“We fought to be together: ‘Let’s be together. We don’t care what anybody says.’ So it was real close to getting married,” Love said.

Their relationship came to an end after Love became pregnant, which she said “put a curve in there for us.”

“It didn’t end good,” she shared. “Let me put it that way... I went on my own with my people and had an abortion.”

While Medley wanted to keep the child, Love worried that a baby would impact her family. At the time, she had two children, Marcus and Chawn, with her former husband Leonard Peete. She later had another son, Jason, with her ex-husband Wesley Mitchell in 1974. ** reached out to Medley but did not immediately hear back.

“It wasn’t nobody’s fault, you know,” she said. “I’m saying it wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t his fault, but that was the end, almost like, of me and Bill.”

*Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been* will be screening at the Toronto International Film Festival through Sept. 17.
